The Madness of War
The artist based this work on an earlier sculpture that collects several meaningful objects from the war: a fragmented grenade, a pistol, clips from a carbine. Central to the composition are three helmets. The first is an English helmet riddled with bullet holes. Next, a Dutch helmet with the left side dented by an impact. Finally, a German helmet from the eastern front, from which the back is completely blown off. The madness of a war none of the young men who wore these helmets had asked for.
