The little church on the hill - Heelsum
The tiny church on the hill in Heelsum is the object of this painting. The building was constructed in 1517 at the request of the lord of Doorwerth, who also owned and inhabited Castle Doorwerth. The church’s roof and nave were heavily damaged in the war. Churches and mills were frequently used as observation posts and shot it at in that capacity. Ruined as it was, it was reconstructed in 1949. Nowadays this beautiful little church still stands on that hill in Heelsum.
