Eusebius Church - After the Battle of Arnhem, September 1944

The iconic Eusebius church in Arnhem was greatly damaged during the war. On the 6th and 7th of October 1944, it was all but destroyed during the bombings. Later, when the Germans detonated the Rhine bridge with explosives, the pressure of the blast was so great it knocked down the remainder of the tower. After the war the church was restored, including its many gorgeous statues and ornaments. The painter has condensed this terrible history in one image with a palette knife, which gives the work great spontaneity and dynamism.
