Drop Zone Y - Ginkelse Heide
On 18 September 1944, at three in the afternoon, the fourth brigade of the 1st Airborne Division landed on the Ginkel heath, dropped by an astounding one hundred and twenty one Dakota airplanes. They saw the heather was burning, still they jumped. The surrounding woods were already occupied by an SS Armored Division and an SS battalion from Amersfoort: the Germans knew they were coming and could freely open fire.
